Janet Stoeke Art Demo

The Fairfax Art League will be hosting an art demo by local artist Janet Stoeke on April 15th at 11am at the Kathryn Higgins Art Gallery & Studio, Mosby Tower, 10560 Main Street, LL-12, Fairfax, VA 22030.

Janet will guide us through the techniques she uses in oil painting. She will start with a toned canvas and her underpainting techniques. She will later focus on composition, defining the important areas of her painting, as well as defining the time of the day and season. She changes the colors as the art evolves. The understory (with snow, or leaf litter or plants) will differ depending on the season.

Artist Biography

Janet Morgan Stoeke was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. She grew up watching her mother paint watercolors and teach outdoor sketch classes. Art supplies were plentiful and easily accessed. In college at Colgate University, she majored in English and Fine Art, and got her MFA from George Washington University in Painting. While working as a designer at the Washingtonian Magazine, she entered a contest and won a publishing contract for her first picture book, Minerva Louise. Twenty-six books later, she has decided to return to focusing on fine art and her first love, oil painting. Her work has been juried into many local exhibits and written up in Elan Magazine. She lives in Fairfax, Virginia with her husband and children.
