COMMUNITY ART IN THE CITY OF FAIRFAX DESIGN CONCEPTS FOR RECYCLED ART INDOOR BOTTLE CAP MURAL
The City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts Public Art Committee is pleased to announce this Call to Artists seeking design concepts for The Plastic Cap Mural, an indoor recycled art project.
Plastics are made of different resin types & density. Caps are often made from a different type of plastic than the rest of the container. Their color & small size can also be problems for recycling. The idea of a Plastic Cap Mural was born by the desire to educate the community on the importance of removing caps on bottles, jugs & tubs before recycling them. The intention is to use an art project as a creative way to remind City of Fairfax residents of how they can make a difference in their world, encourage recycling & positively impact the environment.
The Plastic Cap Mural will be permanently installed onto an interior wall of Green Acres Community Center, 4401 Sideburn Road, Fairfax, Virginia 22030.
Responding artists are asked to create and electronically submit a 2D mural concept, of any style, to be enlarged and transferred onto the installation substrate. The selected concept must accommodate the inherent limitations of the proposed materials (round, rigid plastic bottle caps). Highly detailed designs should be avoided. Color schemes should keep in consideration that bottle cap colors most frequently utilized by the bottled beverage industry are (red, green, blue, and white) however, a percentage of other colors will most likely be available. The theme is open to artist interpretation, but the messaging should strongly convey the importance of protecting the planet.
The artist will be responsible for construction and install of the mural. The City will provide volunteers and bottle caps collected from the community.
The finished mural size will be 12’x 4’.
Deadline: The deadline for all submissions in response to this call is 4:00 PM on Friday, February 4, 2022
