Dear FAL,

Our May show at Old Town Hall is all about you!   The theme is Heritage, A Celebration of Diversity.   We encourage all our artists to enter pieces that reflect their ethnic background or represent a culture that they admire.  You can enter pictures of people, places, buildings, foods and even animals.  Be creative!

The Heritage Festival is the largest party we host all year.  There will be a variety of live entertainment groups, including an Irish band and Hawaiian dancers.

Being an all volunteer organization, we need the help of our members in order for it to be successful.  Please volunteer your time and/or bring a dish to share.

For more information on this show and how to volunteer, read the newsletter below or visit our website at www.fairfaxartleague.net

 2012 Scholarship Winner
Ms. Sejin Park

Fairfax Art League would like to announce their 2012 Scholarship Award winner.  This year the privilege goes to Ms. Sejin Park, a senior at Fairfax High School.   Ms. Park was awarded $500 to further her education in art.  She plans to go to Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).  Ms. Park is a National Silver Key Award for Art Portfolio winner.    She has also been awarded the Regional Gold Key Award for Art Portfolio, and the Regional Silver Key Award for her painting, "Ego".  That painting is now on display at Old Town Hall, lower level.   Fairfax Art League is proud to have Ms. Sejin Park as our 2012 Scholarship Award winner.

Fairfax Art League Positions

Members, our membership year goes from July 1 -June 30.  The following positions are coming available.  Please consider taking on one of these important positions:

President-in-training (Vice President) for the 2012-2013 year: Wendy Wander has agreed to stay on as president for a second year, however, she would like to train someone this year to take over the following year.  As trainee, you would be one of 3 co-vice presidents this year 2012-2013, and take over as president the following year.  Positions are held from July 1-June 30.    Contact Wendy at  wwander@verizon.net if interested.

Hospitality Backup Crew:  Daniele Robbins, our Hospitality Chairperson, and her able assistant Melinda Rhodes are looking for a few members that will help them host our social events throughout the year (Spotlight, Heritage, Holiday Party, and occasional Thursday night receptions and member meeting).  This is a fun position that allows you to meet and interact with other members.  If you are interested in being on this crew, please contact Daniele at robbinsdaniele@yahoo.com

Fairfax Old Town Hall Gallery News

The Spotlight Reception was a delight!  It was very well attended - our Old Town Hall Gallery was very full. Family, friends, guests, and members were enjoying the art, the buffet table, good conversation, and our lovely harp music!  Harpist Kate Rogers provided music for our reception. The Spotlight Awards were announced by Armistice Turtora.  Armistice is a founding member of the Parks Committee in the Town of Fairfax - she was volunteering and helping before Fairfax became a city. Armistice is currently a member of the City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts.   She is also an artist - both lace maker, and tatter.

And the Spotlight Award winners are:

Catherine Mommsen - Best in Show

Ian Frank - 1st Place

Jacqueline Elwell - Special Merit

Nancy Whitfill - Special Merit

Carol Caputo - Honorable Mention

Wendy Wander - Honorable Mention

Congratulations to all our winners!

Thank you to this year's judge, Lisa Semerad.  A very special thank you to all our members who participated - without you, there would be no Spotlight Show.  An enormous thank you to Sonia O'Donnell - this year's Spotlight Chairman.  Sonia helped to hang the show, and also created our Spotlight show programs.  Also, thank you to our Hospitality Chairman, Daniele Robbins, who was responsible for the buffet table and decorations.

Fairfax Village Gallery News

FAL's featured artist for May is Larry Oskin.  He will have a prominent show at the Village Gallery.  His reception, varying from past receptions which were held at the Old Town Hall Gallery will be at the Village on May 10 from 7 to 9 p.m.  Along with Larry FAL members will have on display a verity of work.  We are anticipating an exceptional show this month.

Looking ahead.  The theme for June's show is "Summertime".  Works depicting travel, the beach, laying about in the backyard, etc., are all good topics.  We are looking forward to see what our members will be showing.

Peoples Choice award for April has not been selected as of the writing of this piece.  We will report the winner in the next newsletter.

Note to Painters:  A few FAL members are using the Village Gallery as a studio during the week.  Please let me know If you would like to paint in the gallery during the week.  Arrangements can be made to store your works in progress. Don Allen  at donsallen@cox.net
